Women in IT: Czechia has been last in Europe for seven years

Women make up 12.9% of ICT specialists in Czechia, the lowest share of any EU country. Over ten years the number of women in IT grew by 84% and the number of men by 35%. Even so, the gap to the rest of Europe is not getting smaller.

In our article on the number of ICT specialists we mentioned that women make up 12.9% of them in Czechia. We took a closer look at that figure. According to Eurostat, Czechia has the lowest share of women among ICT specialists in the whole EU, for the seventh year running.

How does Czechia compare with the rest of Europe?

In 2025 women made up 12.9% of ICT specialists in Czechia and 19.5% in the EU (both Eurostat estimates). Czechia has been last in the EU every year since 2019, and it is also lowest among all 33 European countries for which Eurostat has published a 2025 figure.

Highest share of womenLowest share of women
Romania27.8%Czechia12.9%
Latvia25.9%Hungary15.0%
Bulgaria25.0%Slovakia15.5%
Sweden24.6%Italy16.6%
Finland24.3%Poland16.6%

Romania, Latvia and Bulgaria have the highest shares, with Sweden and Finland behind them. A low share of women is therefore not the rule across Central and Eastern Europe.

More women are joining, but the gap stays the same

Over ten years the number of women among ICT specialists in Czechia rose from 17.4 thousand in 2015 to 32.0 thousand in 2025, an increase of 84%. The number of men grew by 35%. The share of women rose from 9.8% to 12.9% as a result. Eurostat flags a break in the time series in 2021, so the comparison with 2015 is only indicative.

Across the EU, though, the number of women grew at a similar pace, by 89%. Czechia's distance from the EU average therefore stayed almost the same: 6.7 percentage points in 2015 and 6.6 points in 2025 (our own calculation from Eurostat data). Between 2024 and 2025 the Czech share hardly moved (13.0% and 12.9%).

How many men and women work in IT?

According to Eurostat data as processed by the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), ICT specialists account for 7.7% of employed men in Czechia, slightly more than in the EU (7.5%). For women the figure is 1.3%, against 2.1% in the EU.

Czech men work as ICT specialists as often as men elsewhere in Europe, or even more often. The whole difference from the EU in the share of ICT specialists in total employment (4.7% against 5.0%) therefore comes from women.

How many women study IT?

Among people who graduated from universities and tertiary professional schools in ICT fields in 2024, women made up 17.6% in Czechia and 22.1% in the EU (our own calculation from Eurostat counts). Czechia ranks 23rd of 27 countries. Sweden and Estonia have the highest share (36.1%), Spain the lowest (14.4%).

According to the CZSO, 4,740 people graduated in ICT fields in Czechia in 2025, 887 of them women. Women make up less than 20% of ICT students, the lowest share of any group of fields. 28% of ICT graduates came from universities in Brno.

Since 2017 the number of ICT graduates has grown by 15% in Czechia (from 3,964 to 4,554 in 2024) and by 58% in the EU (our own calculation from Eurostat data).

How does pay differ between men and women in IT?

According to the CZSO (which here counts only the CZ-ISCO 25 group, a narrower definition than Eurostat's), female ICT specialists had an average gross monthly wage of CZK 83,028 in 2025, and men CZK 103,282. The difference is CZK 20,254, or 19.6% of men's pay. In 2015 it was 16.5%. The median, meaning the middle wage, was CZK 73,040 for women and CZK 91,398 for men.

This figure needs careful reading. It is an unadjusted gap: it does not take position, experience or working hours into account, so it does not show how much women are paid for the same work. Among ICT technicians the gap is only 2.4%.

In the private sector, both male and female ICT specialists earn roughly 1.8 to 1.9 times the average wage of men and women in that sector respectively. We cover ICT specialists' pay in detail in the article How much people earn in IT.

What does this mean for companies?

  • The pool of candidates is smaller than it could be. If Czechia had the EU average share of women, there would be roughly 16 thousand more women in IT for the same total number of ICT specialists (our own calculation). Companies looking for ICT specialists are competing for a smaller group of people.
  • Track your own figures. The unadjusted pay gap in IT has widened over the last three years (from 16.6% in 2022 to 19.6% in 2025). A company that compares the pay of men and women in the same positions knows where it stands.

Summary

  • Women make up 12.9% of ICT specialists in Czechia, the lowest share in the EU (average 19.5%). Czechia has been last since 2019.
  • The number of women in IT is growing faster than the number of men, but the gap to Europe has not changed in ten years.
  • According to the CZSO, female ICT specialists earn an average wage 19.6% lower than men. The gap is not adjusted for position or experience.
