Eurostat counts ICT specialists, the people usually called IT specialists, in the same way across the whole EU. In 2025 there were more than 10.4 million of them in the EU, 5.0% of people in employment. At 4.7%, Czechia is slightly below the EU average.

Who counts as an ICT specialist?

Eurostat counts as ICT specialists the people whose main job is developing, operating or maintaining information and communication technologies. They include software developers, analysts, database and network administrators and security specialists, as well as ICT technicians and ICT managers. The data come from the Labour Force Survey and follow the international classification of occupations, ISCO-08.

What counts is the occupation, not the company's industry. A developer at a bank or a network administrator at a hospital counts as an ICT specialist; an accountant or HR specialist at a software company does not. That is why the number of ICT specialists differs from the number of people employed in the information and communication sector.

How fast is their number growing?

YearCzechia (thousands)Share of employment in CzechiaEU share
2015177.13.5%3.5% (estimate)
2024234.64.5%4.9% (estimate)
2025248.24.7%5.0% (estimate)

Over ten years, from 2015 to 2025, the number of ICT specialists in Czechia rose by roughly 40% (from 177,100 to 248,200, our own calculation from Eurostat data). Between 2024 and 2025 alone it grew by more than 13,000 people, just under 6%.

Growth was not steady. After 2021 the number of ICT specialists in Czechia fell for two years and only grew again in 2024 and 2025. The starting year 2015 was also lower in the Czech series than the year before, so treat the growth percentage as indicative.

Across the EU the number of ICT specialists grew faster: by 59.4% between 2015 and 2025 according to Eurostat, while total employment rose by 9.8%. In 2015 Czechia and the EU had the same share of ICT specialists in employment, 3.5%. Today Czechia is below the EU average.

One note on comparisons: Eurostat marks a break in the time series in 2021, so the data before and after it are not fully comparable.

How many of them are women?

Women made up 12.9% of ICT specialists in Czechia in 2025 (Eurostat estimate). In the EU the figure was 19.5%. The share of women in Czechia has risen over ten years, from 9.8% in 2015, but remains well below the EU average.

Why do the Eurostat and CZSO figures differ?

If you look for data on IT professionals in Czechia, you will come across two different figures. The Czech Statistical Office (CZSO) reports 227,900 ICT professionals for 2024 (4.4% of people in employment), of whom roughly 135,000 are ICT specialists in the narrower sense. Eurostat reports 234,600 ICT specialists for the same year.

The difference is not an error. Both institutions work from the Labour Force Survey and include ICT technicians and ICT managers in the broader group. They differ in the exact list of occupations taken from the classification. CZSO also reports a narrower group of ICT specialists separately, covering just one major group of the classification. So do not add the figures together, and use Eurostat for comparisons between countries. For a more detailed view of Czechia, for example of pay, CZSO is more useful.

Where can you find current figures?

Eurostat publishes data on ICT specialists once a year, usually in spring for the previous year. You will find them in the Eurostat database under the codes isoc_sks_itspt (total) and isoc_sks_itsps (by sex), and in the overview article ICT specialists in employment. The Czech Statistical Office has a separate page on ICT professionals and their wages (in Czech), which gives earnings as well as headcounts. Links to all sources are below the article.

What does this mean for companies?

The statistics show that the number of ICT specialists in Czechia has been rising over the long term, though not steadily. Even so, their share is lower than the EU average and their number grew more slowly over the past ten years. Companies looking for experienced people are therefore competing for a limited pool of specialists.

In practice this means:

  • Allow for time. Specialists make up a smaller share of employment than the EU average, so finding the right person can take a while.
  • Search more widely. Beyond Czechia, it pays to look in other EU countries too, especially for roles where English and remote work are enough.
  • Consider the form of cooperation. If you need capacity straight away and for a limited time, a contractor or an agency worker can be quicker. We describe the differences in the article Contractor, employee or agency worker?.

Summary

  • According to Eurostat, 248,200 ICT specialists worked in Czechia in 2025, 4.7% of people in employment (EU 5.0%).
  • Their number grew by roughly 40% over ten years, compared with 59.4% in the EU. Women make up 12.9% of ICT specialists in Czechia and 19.5% in the EU.
  • Eurostat and CZSO count ICT specialists using different lists of occupations. Do not add the figures together, and use Eurostat for international comparisons.
